JK ROWLING: I have invented a fantastical setting that is not really meant to sustain any sort of meaningful long-term narrative! okay time for hundreds of pages of worldbuilding based off my original flawed concepts

the first couple of Harry Potters are clearly unambitious but perfectly reasonable YA, and then about halfway through the third one she bought her own hype and started believing she was writing her generation's LORD OF THE RINGS

I've been saying this for YEARS. Harry Potter's worldbuilding is bad because the first books were written clearly assuming that no one was ever going to be reading them questioning the details. They fit in with other 90s "chapter books", generally on a Roald Dahl level.

And when the POV is just Harry, and the entire world is just the Dursley's House, Diagon Alley, and Hogwarts it works just fine. But the moment it started building beyond that the entire world kinda stops making sense because the foundation is still those first 3ish books.

The foundation of the DC universe is that no one can tell Clark Kent and Superman are the same. The foundation of the Harry Potter universe is that there is a secret population of magic-users who are like maybe 1% of the world's population but have a functioning alternate society
