Great news! As of now, "TRUE OR FALSE: A CIA Analyst’s Guide to Identifying and Fighting Fake News" is up for pre-order on book sites all over the world! Here's a thread on where you can get it ahead of its release on 19 May. 1. Target:

  2. Take all the claims you might see online today and moving forward through the primary process with a grain of salt. Various groups and governments would love nothing more than for Democrats to come away from the primary season thinking the vote was rigged.

  3. The most damaging part about voter fraud is the narrative itself. Despite one-off stories about people who illegally voted, or reported problems w/ voting machines, it's VERY difficult to commit. But it's easy to weaken the credibility of election results by claiming voter fraud.

  7. A good time to tweet a reminder that if you're an indie bookstore and you want me to come do an event at your place, shoot me an invite here:

  8. Thank you so much for supporting your local indie and TRUE OR FALSE! I do hope to have an event in NYC in the next couple months. I'll keep you all posted! And I'm going to keep my website up to date with my events once they're all finalized.

  9. Me: Why do people freak out when I, a former CIA officer, follow them on social media? I'm nice! Also me: A former intel officer from another country sent me a LinkedIn request? Oh hell no!

  10. Reminder that there's now a button to report a tweet for "misleading about a political election." There are 3 sub-categories for which you can flag a tweet: 1. False info about where/how to vote 2. Voter suppression/intimidation 3. Hiding affiliation with a party/campaign/etc

Worth remembering: RT rarely covers Russia itself. This week not *one* of the 106 videos captured had a domestic focus. Russia doesn't try to attract audiences to its model, but rather, to diminish the attraction of the West.

Here's some of what we scraped from Russian state owned media broadcasts last week. Similar themes: criticism of the establishment (including establishment media), and amplification of the progressive/centrist split.

  13. Last time I voted, a poll worker said to me, "We technically have the assistive voting stuff, but it takes about 20 minutes to set up because we've never used it before. And it might not work. Want to try it?" I didn't need it, but this could have prevented others from voting.

  14. 4. The idea is to discredit sources of info. Make it feel like truth/facts are a matter of opinion & fuel the feeling that you can't trust anything. They want to cause confusion while promoting their own narratives by directly targeting places they know people go to for answers.

  15. 3. For example, I recently discovered that the same exact text about the alleged Whistleblower was posted as a question on a popular question-asking site by accounts under different names, but all within the same 20 minute window. Other accounts then replied with "answers."

  16. 2. Personally, I've been targeted by Russian government-run media outlets and known Russian trolls online. Other disinfo experts experience the same. Platforms people turn to (rightly or wrongly) for information are also targets, such as Wikipedia, Quora, & Yahoo Answers.

  17. 1. SHORT THREAD. Places/experts people rely on as sources of information continue to be targeted by groups & governments looking to erode truth & create division. For example, governments are trying to discredit disinformation analysts and journalists conducting investigations.
