Go on a journey with me: • A game launches at $15 • It took 3 years to make (one dev) • Avg annual income in the US (2016) was $31k • The game is sold on the largest PC storefront, Steam • Steam takes 30% of revenue, hard stop • 8,857 copies must be sold to break even

I'm still piecing a lot of this together, but even the data I've obtained so far is shocking. Mike Rose said in a GDC talk that 93% of PC developers don't make enough annually to survive. Now tell me again why you think [insert indie game] is too expensive.

I pulled Steam Spy stats on 3 indies featured in a PC Mag article. I will omit the names because this is paid-for feature. • Average owners: 4,666 • Average price: $14 • Average rating: 88% • Average playtime: 5 Hours Let that sink in

I chose games listed in PC Mag because I wanted to remove potential "visibility" bias. They all got the same feature and that's better than most indie games. I chose games with positive reviews to remove "the game sucks" quips. This is hardly concrete, but it is revealing.

In the 90s I was buying games for $40. With inflation that would be $78 in 2019. My case is that we need to stop racing to the bottom. Of course there are much larger issues (like inflation vs. income) but as consumers we should start valuing time vs. money. No devs = No games

I realize this isn't my usual "helpful social media advice" data rambling. Indie developers are special creatures and I aim to protect them and their livelihoods any chance I get. Their passion deserves, nay, DEMANDS it. 20+ hours for $15 is a good freaking deal, bro. ~Fin

For the respect of the battery life in my cellular device, I must leave you all. I’ll try to answer a few more things when I get to my computer 😊 I’m just a girl with an unhealthy obsession with numbers. Blanket statements don’t exist on Twitter.pic.twitter.com/1x2DJ9R7dh

Good for an indie dev if they can either secure an exclusive deal which the game has to be worth or without the deal have a big enough following where the lack of eyes will find their game. Even on steam if the game is already niche or doesnt gain an audience its a rough road.

Would placing a game on GoG or Epic (where they don't take as much of the top) cause the price of said indie game to go down?

There are so, so, so many factors that go into why a game is priced the way it is. That's a broad question with a lot of potential answers. I will state that I believe in multiple PC storefronts for competition and growth. It only helps the developers who are already struggling.
