Back at this week, for the first time in 20 years, to talk about assessing and creative practices. As one of the founding tutors it’ll be interesting for several reasons, but particularly as it’s where many of my ideas about were formed.

Flattered to discover the number of HE colleague using my work on conceptions of creativity to inform their own work with students across several disciplines. Somewhat perplexed at the thankfully few times it’s been misinterpreted, misunderstood or even plagiarised!

Somewhat chuffed to discover my work on creativity being used to frame and reflect on the work of accountancy students and the successful efforts to enhance their creativity and critical thinking. Creative accounting indeed!

I really like the way Reading integrated key ‘Pedagogical Principles’ into their Curriculum Framework. It’s a good list.

Great to have colleagues in the sector contacting me already about developing similar Frameworks in their own institutions. Perhaps one outcome of our LTHE chat will be a regular discussion group that brings colleagues together who are involved in this area of work?

A few years ago I had a job interview for a well known drama school where I was told that in my uni job I “didn’t prepare students for industry” 🔽 see below for correct answer for anyone who makes a claim to owning it.

Agree - also invention, imagination, curiosity, enquiry, design disruption, creative left-field thinking that AHSS brings to innovation thought and practice - but also hoping that BA continues to support niche enquiry and knowledge pursuit for the sake of intellect and culture.

The BA can lead effort to develop an infrastructure for R&D which gives AHSS a central role alongside STEM in our understanding of innovation: from definitions and metrics to methods and evaluation. How eg can AHSS help us structure the future of work?

Shifting from “What is the answer to this?” to What might be an answer to this?” Opens up curiosity, creativity, etc.

Last year, I switched from asking students, “Any questions?” to “What questions do you have for me?” And it’s made a world of difference. It’s got me wondering: what simple shifts in phrasing, wording, or questioning has helped your teaching?
