Whilst in transit, I was hit up by someone who I believe attended one of my #webperf lunch & learns. Told me they went live w/ a site but co-workers wondered why it was slow. Asked if I can look @ it quick. NP.

Eventually sat down, and popped open @ChromeDevTools and poked around. Took some screen shots, blocked some assets, looked @ film strip, then the waterfall and thought... hold on. That's a rather large img sprite.

It actually wasn't a sprite, and what seemed like the entire page was one img. A 2000 x 53000 image asset. 👀. I kindly mentioned that this is likely the *accelerant* (ironically) in this performance fire.pic.twitter.com/IJ5UAwM8aF

Explained taxing mem issues, decoding esp on 📲, and added that these kind of oversights can be picked up quickly in #DevTools, and testing should as quotidian as a morning cup of mocha. There was discovery + delight in our convo.

Outside of discussing #webperf, they did mention how intimidating #DevTools can be, and I'm assuming as such - avoids it all together. This needs to be addressed @ChromeDevTools @FirefoxDevTools

I think this is at the core of many perf problems. Perf devtools are intimidating or unknown so they often go unused. Need to surface hooks to draw people in casually.

agreed. I have a #devtools talk that I'm making as accessible, comestible and inoffensive as possible for the everyday dev. But it should be something that stays open at all times. Browsers + devtools are like wine & cheese - perfect complement. 😄🍷🧀

The Audits panel is one approach we're approaching as the gateway to performance analysis

That sounds like a good thing to do, but my hunch is that many devs won't explore enough to find it. I know real estate and attention are expensive, but I'd love to see more flags surfaced in places all devs are already looking: on the page or in the console.

For example, in Chrome devtools, some of the warnings that show up when verbose mode is activated are really great. But, I've only met a handful of devs who actually know about this feature.
