From the Inspector, I use 2x CMD+Shift+d to Dock/Undock to go to the tab. From the document, I use CMD+Option+i to bring back the dev tools
That works too! With the downside of changing the position of the DevTools window.

it actually comes back at the exact same place on my machine :) btw, Chrome DevTools is what makes me want to go to work every single day <3

You're right, when the DevTools window is on same desktop as the tab (usually the case) it returns to its position
