    Russian forces moved further into Irpin overnight but faced a setback today. “We’re hitting them because they’ve run out of artillery shells,” said a Ukrainian soldier. “We can say that Irpin is theirs. But we’ll cut them off now that the people are out.”

    “Rockets! Get down!” a Ukrainian soldier barked at the endless queue of fleeing people. Some of them dropped to the ground, but many were just too exhausted to move in any direction other than another step forward.

    Reporting on Irpin residents fleeing Russian attacks today, I met Ukrainian playwright & poet Oleksandr Irvanets, his partner Oksana Tsyupa, & their cat Matsuo Bashō. Irvanets shared a poem he wrote as Russia shelled Irpin. I translated part of it below.

    Evacuation still underway in Irpin. Heartbreaking scenes of people fleeing with what little they can carry over this destroyed bridge. Children and old people weeping. Animals howling. Residents are emerging for the first time in 12 days. They’ve had no communication with family.
