It was the same show then as it is now. Isn't it the point that the characters are flawed and have weakness? It wouldn't be interesting if everything was politically correct and they just sat round a table agreeing with no problems, conflicts or weaknesses.

Ross reacting to the breakdown of his marriage by embracing his wife's revelation she's a lesbian and supporting them in their marriage and the bringing up of their child would be out of character. Millenials do realise the world and it's people are far from perfect don't they?

A fact people are clearly overlooking is how progressive
