And I still don't get you have to register every single time to cast your vote. In my country you're automatically registered the moment you hit 18. As soon as an election comes up we receive our voting cards in the mail.

I understand that this has to do with the deep ingrained distrust that Americans seem to have against government. To get a card automatically requires that you are in a permanent government-controlled registration. That thought alone is like blasphemy to some in the USA.

How can US citizens lose their registration and right to vote? I have never heard of a similar incident in my country. Every citizen above 18 always automatically receives a govt invitation ahead of every vote. Even prison inmates can vote, despite a hand full extreme ones.

People “fall off” lists and don’t realize it till it’s too late (change of address, name etc.)

We moved one state away. First thing I did was spend a glorious amount of time at the DMV with an 8 year old for a new driver's license and register to vote. Now I have to figure out how to get to the correct voting place during work hours.
