there is a glitch they are working on for the next patch where reinforcements show up immediately. Its made a couple of missions absolute hell.

Yeah, I'm at Smithon right now. Thinking I might wait for the patch before I try it again

Everyone says Smithon is battletech hell...

I've beaten it, but only by ignoring every secondary objective

Which one was Smithon? I got all the secondary objectives for missions except that stupid ammo-crate one (since I can't be arsed to deploy a light mech for the sole purpose of chasing down some trucks)

That would be the one. I let the trucks get away and used most of the ammo crates as bombs to damage the enemy mechs

Ahh, gotcha. Are you using stock mechs or reconfiguring them? You should be able to turn the Shadowhawk into a pretty decent alpha striker if you're trying to save the crates.

Centurion and Shadowhawk configured for close range (AC10s, Med lasers, SRMs) Thunderbolt and Dragon for long range (AC5s, PPCs, LRMs)

Usually you only need one long range mech (primarily for knockdown - pop some LRMs then have another mech finish). I'd try swapping one of your long range ones out for another bruiser medium range configuration and see how that feels.

I've been filling in the tactics skill group, so I can use the longer range weapons up close. I'm thinking my problem is I'm overarmored on a could and need to drop some armor for more weapons.

Just remember, the best defense is coring out as many enemy mechs before they can shoot back :p

Yeah, I use sensor locks to strip the evasion off light mechs and can usually one shot them with 1-2 alphas from my heavies.
