Explain something to me re punting. Why don’t they kick it out of bounds as close to the end zone as possible? Seems so much less risk than the ball bouncing through for a touchback, and you eliminate them running it back for any yardage.
NFL balls are significantly smaller than rugby balls, and more pointed. Lot smaller sweet spot to hit, so if you mess up even a tiny bit, it's magnified.

Fair. I guess I’d want my team to use it when they’re punting at half way, as so often that seems to just bounce out for a touchback, so what have you really got to lose with a shank, but totally get what you’re saying.

In a +50 situation (punting on your opponent's side of the field) 90% of guys use the Aussie Rules style kick since it's easier to control and more likely to bounce backwards if it hits. That's why you don't see coffin corner punts anymore.
