Retrofitting an occupied apartment building to add sprinklers is both massively expensive and massively disruptive. It’s a non-starter in a condominium, where the unit owners would both have to cover the expense and deal with having the walls & ceilings of every room ripped up.

FDNY reported that the entire apartment was up in flames by the time they got there. A lack of working smoke detectors (which the building WAS required to have) probably contributed more than the lack of sprinklers.

I'd be willing to bet there's gonna be a whole litany of problems once the forensic crew finishes going through

Quite possibly, but high rise apartment fires happen in NYC with some regularity. The big piece of the fire code, which seems to have held up here is that the fire itself was contained to the apartment where it started.

This is a tragic and awful situation in a building that has Trump’s name on it, which he prides himself on having built. Trump himself is incompetent on a good day, and evil on a bad one. Yet this might not be something that can be blamed on him.

If you put your name on it, the buck stops here.
