Mostly I agree, but this would make it hard to punish students who walk out for ignoble reasons. Would rather see supportive and constructive “punishments.”
I made it a special point to talk about Tinker v Des Moines in this week's lesson. I had to make it special as the State of Florida doesn't include it in its American History curriculum.

Punishing the students who walked out strengthens their message. If walking out were consequence-free it wouldn't be nearly as powerful. The kids knew the consequences and felt strongly enough to demonstrate anyway.
If the punishment for participating in today's protest is harsher than your run of the mill ditching, then I absolutely agree with you.
I’m more afraid of the passive aggressive ‘punishment’ kids will get from teachers with differing views. You know, fun freaks. They will discriminate against these kids in grades, etc.
