Silicon Valley - "Automated cars are the future!" Me - "An AI capable of navigating thousands of multiple vehicles simultaneously in downtown LA on a rainy Saturday night is already so far past basic human capabilities as to render our existence meaningless."

Having vision that doesn’t rely solely on the visible light spectrum is a huge advantage

flip side - the human brain performs millions of complex calculations per second, not all related to immediate traffic conditions

Is that a plus or minus for humans driving? Computers perform millions of calculations a second and in this case entirely focused on traffic without boredom, intoxication or sleepiness

Computers perform millions of *simple* calculations per second. Witness the hurdles in robotics trying to get something to walk.

They’re pretty good... https://youtu.be/aR5Z6AoMh6U It’s more of an issue in us not really understanding how we actually walk in great detail and then giving a robot enough sensors to match and process what we do subconsciously

oh I've seen the video. I'm referring to the fact that even getting a robot to do that took millions of lines of code

And now you're talking about doing it with not just one actor, but tens of thousands, in chaotic and rapidly changing conditions. Street light out? Better have an exception for that. Road work? Better have an exception. Etc etc.

Chris, I'm a long haul truck driver. Hazmat tankers too. When do you think technology puts me out of a job? I think it'll still be 20+ years, but I'm prepared to be wrong.

I think trucks might come sooner than cars, especially if the routes don't involve downtown navigation. I'd put it at 5-10 (hazmat might take longer)
