I mean, maybe eventually, but automated cars can be the future without a central controller

Not if you want to avoid the tragedy of the commons. If every actor is self serving, you're going to end up with the mother of all traffic jams.

So we already have roads full of non-coordinated self-serving actors. I don't see why automating the vehicle navigation changes the status quo to gridlock. If anything, the reduction in accidents should push the other way

Yeah, I'm completely missing your point here. My nav software already is smarter than that at routing me. Sorry I don't get it

If there isn't a central hub making sure every car isn't taking a right on Sunset, Sunset is gonna be one hell of a mess.

If everyone is going to a football game, routes to the stadium are gonna be heavily trafficked. But that isn't a change from today. Where people are going and when isn't going to change as a result of cars driving themselves

You're missing the point. An AI that can seamlessly manage that is capable of handling so much information at once that we're essentially obsolete.

I did say I was missing your point. I'm just observing that current autonomous cars A) work and B) don't require a centralized controller. They work as drop-ins to the current system. It's possible that they're the future even without a central controller

I agree that they're useable in low impact conditions (highway, light traffic city). LA on Saturday night in the rain is a clusterfuck.
