Regardless, even if this person posted first to forums, I'm mostly of the personal belief that companies shouldn't publicly shame users.

counterpoint - shame the fuck out of assholes, make them go away, and prevent assholes-in-training from maturing

does public shaming work that reliably though? i mean, people tend to double down and create entire abusive sub-communities in 'support'.

Depends how hot the burn is. If you do it right, everyone laughs and they slink away, never to be heard from again.

Also, lemme be clear, you can't just halfass it and be like "this person was bad." You obliterate them and ten generations.

I forget which MMO did it, but they had public executions of hackers and botters. GMs descending with flaming banhammers.

IIRC Guild Wars did it a couple of times - brought the cheaters to a public spot, stripped them, & banned them.

yeah, but cheating feels different. it's more easily provable and everyone can agree cheaters are bad. abuse is subjective.

so here's the thing. I would've stopped trolling in the realm forums for WoW if there had been clear consequences

granted, I used my powers to engage assholes, but I still was making their lives miserable

A clear policy of "you will be shamed/banned for doing this" would have nipped that in the bud

i know that internally there are some guidelines for CS on how abuse is dealt with. but those have never been made public.

and yeah, they should make them public. listing consequences is so basic, but everyone is scared to do so.
