this is a story that would be immediately obvious as a non-story to anyone who has played Elite Dangerous past the tutorial and i don't know why polygon ran ithttps://www.polygon.com/features/2021/2/4/22264605/elite-dangerous-newbies-trapped-forced-labor …

the hint that this is a non-story is right here. self-destructing sends you back to the last actual station you were at, at the cost of 5% of the value of the ship you're flying. worst-case you lose just that ship and get a free starter ship; you don't lose everythingpic.twitter.com/YEWUxHOeVM

I’m of two minds on this. Yeah, the obvious (and intelligent) choice is to just take the self-destruct tax, but there’s also something to be said about asking from a design perspective what the fuck is wrong with you that you created a potential system for space slavery.

it's not "space slavery" unless you accept the article's premise that it's possible to be trapped somewhere, which you can't be

the story here is that some kids couldn't tell RP from the actual rules of the game, so the framing of this article is absolutely screwy

I mean, there *is* the part where a ten year old was about to be recruited by edgelords. That might be an issue.

We don’t grow up with innate knowledge of game systems and when you’re young, the idea of taking the self destruct tax simply might not occur to you or be something you’re willing to accept. Again - from a design perspective, what’s the usefulness of incentivizing that behavior?

I don't think it's incentivized, though? Unless you somehow get to a completely new and ignorant player and teach them how to play the game wrong specifically to abuse them it's a highly unlikely scenario Otherwise just normal casual play will teach you that blowing up is normal
