Why the fuck does that create an actual link? Like, seriously what is going on at Twitter that they think that should be a thing?

As best I can tell it bases it on the top-level domain (the part between the last dot and the implied dot at the end that denotes the root). So http://astronautpointinggun.meme gets the link treatment because there *is* a .meme TLD (thanks ICANN) but random.qyzzx doesn't.

(As others have pointed out, the "automatic link if it could be a valid domain" thing is kinda bad security practice. I'm also still a little miffed that anyone with a few hundred grand lying around can buy a TLD now.)

Yeah, that doesn’t seem great. I’m gonna delete the tweet just in case someone does something stupid with that particular link
