@ChrisWarcraft another serious question. 1. thanks for answering the last one about mouth guards. 2. How does the play start work? I hear so many things yelled by quarterbacks and I can’t understand how the team know to go.

So that’s the snap count. It’s a combination of identifying the front and potential pressure for the offensive line (if you hear “Mike” that’s the middle linebacker, other times the QB will just call out the jersey number) coupled with the actual count itself.

In the huddle, the QB will let everyone know what the count is (at it’s most simple, “on one” means the first “hut,” “on two” means the second “hut,” and then it gets progressively more complicated from there). In addition, the QB might audible into a different play if he sees

a particular look that he thinks he can take advantage of (for example, if he thinks the defense is running a Cover 2 scheme, he might switch a receiver’s route to go down the middle of the field to try and find the gap between the safeties).
