@ChrisWarcraft I know it’s important not to “out kick your coverage,” but it seems we don’t see as many really long punts as we used to.
Have you noticed that or am I imagining it?
Related, how many punters could kick a 90+ yarder if they were allowed to?

A 90 yarder would be tough, but most guys can drive it 75-80 if they’re going purely for distance and don’t care about hangtime at all. Problem is you’re only gonna get about 3ish seconds of hangtime, so the returner can easily track it down and have plenty of field to work with.

Finally getting to finish the Vikings game inspired another scenario. What about the free kick after a safety? Teams usually punt. No rush, perfect conditions indoors... wouldn’t that be an ideal time to send it as far as possible? Maybe get a touchback?

You do try to send it as far as possible, it’s just you’re kicking it a really long ways, and it also needs to have good hangtime. Remember, you’re starting further back than a normal kickoff.
