Are you coming from an assumption that anyone who doesn’t understand that “defund” doesn’t mean “abolish” is acting in bad faith? I’m guessing so, and on that guess I completely get your position. But at this relatively early stage I get the sense MANY do not grok this nuance.

The term "defund the police" is unpopular, but the policies it refers to are popular and effective. What's our priority, the slogan, or the policies? Is our energy most efficiently spent with the easier sell of the policies, or with clarifying the slogan?

We progressives need to be more cognizant of how our slogans sound to others. And no, not just to racists and fascists. "Defund the police" is effective at one thing - eliciting cheers from the left. And not even the entire left - many progressives are also turned off by it.
