The IA is sharing books it bought legally. What it did not do is pay per lend. Something publishers desperately want but would completely bankrupt every lending library.

Oh I can’t wait to see how many books get written when authors get paid a $40 one time fee. Remember how I said you’d turn the domain of art into the sole playground of the rich? Because that’s what you’re doing.

Ah, so the problem is not that this library did not pay, but they did not pay enough. How much is the right amount?

That’s the debate we should be having, and I guarantee you the number isn’t “pay once and then distribute for infinity”. Which, again, is the whole thrust of Wendig’s argument.

"The debate we should be having" is a long step back from "this is piracy".

No, because what the IA did is piracy. What the publishers are trying to do, which again you are determined to ignore, is not something I agree with and the debate is about how to compensate creators fairly. Giving away their work for free is not the answer.

I thought it was a debate. Make up your mind. Is the IA a "pirate", subject to being destroyed by the law for the transgression, or the other party in what should be a negotiation about how lending libraries can continue to exist?

Jesus fucking Christ in a wheelbarrow, it’s NOT A FUCKING BINARY YOU DUMBFUCK WILLFULLY OBTUSE ASSHOLE. The IA was just fine lending books under established law that had a mechanism to make sure creators got compensated. They violated that law when they violated creators’ rights

Authors WANT libraries to exist. No one is arguing your straw man. What authors also want is FOOD, and HEALTH INSURANCE, and RENT, and that’s what the IA’s position would take away. Goddamn.

It's not libraries like Internet Archive taking food or medicine or housing away from you.

It certainly is when an author isn’t compensated for their work.

You're not going to get paid every time a library lends your book. Otherwise libraries couldn't exist.
