Billionaires can own libraries too. In fact, historically it’s very common. Didn’t stop them from some light piracy now and then either.

And yet, you have on one hand the lending library you do criticize in strong terms, and the corporation owned by a reclusive billionaire family that squeezes libraries and educational institutions everywhere for greater profit, which you do not.

Oh, you want me to say fuck Macmillan? Absolutely fuck Macmillan. I think their stance on digital rights and ebooks has been absolutely atrocious for years. That still doesn’t excuse you mobbing up with everyone else and going after someone who is not Macmillan.

Then why the fuck are you mouthing their exact standards of piracy that aren't even based in any written law or legal precedent, you complete fucking rube?

Who taught you that what the Internet Archive was doing was actually piracy? Figure out the answer to that question and you can figure out why people are mad at Wendig.

Book publishers have been arguing that lending libraries are pirates taking money out of their authors' mouths for ages. Why the fuck are you believing it now?

Uhhh, because while the law isn’t settled on CDL, it is absolutely settled on unlimited distribution of works that you do not own the rights to distribute unlimitedly. It’s not Macmillan’s definition of piracy, it’s society’s. That was Chuck’s entire point.

If you’d bothered to read what he wrote instead of going full pitchfork, you’d have realized his issue isn’t with IA digitally distributing works. It’s that they do not own the rights to distribute them in an unlimited fashion, and doing so is a net harm to marginalized authors.

And while Ars Technica has a wonderful piece on how piracy can actually result in positive net sales for GAMES, that same article points out that the study which found that also found it has the accepted net negative on films and BOOKS.

So yeah, up until the IA decided to throw established copyright to the wind, they were just fine. They’ll likely still be fine moving forward, as the vast majority of authors speaking on this (including Chuck) have stated they don’t have a problem with the IA, but the piracy.

And if the publishers try to play hardball it is VERY likely they’ll receive a ton of pushback from the very people who make them money. So maybe put the fucking pitchfork down and stop harassing individuals when your issue is with corporations.
