Couple things I noticed from the protest. 1) Lot of the rhetoric from the white nationalist side was “get out of my city,” as if black people don’t live here too. 2) Cops need a better plan to separate groups, as their funneling up PCH pushed both together.

3) *Lot* of people weren’t wearing masks. Almost 100% on the white nationalist side, and probably 20-30% on the BLM side (I wore mine). I tried to distance as much as possible and showered and disinfected when I got home, but the next two weeks are going to be interesting.

4) There was a very distinct homogeneity to the white nationalist side. White, mid 40s or older, almost all male. The BLM side had teenagers ranging up to grandparents of all races.

Speaking as a white dude in his mid-40s, I really want to know what happened in our collective experience that made so many of us like that. Because you're right, people in my demo make up a significant part of the white nationalist movement.

I think a lot can be traced back to the idea of American exceptionalism being taught in schools, which also focused primarily on white accomplishments.

I can see that. I'll freely admit to being very much in that "Alex P. Keaton" white Republican mold through my teens and early twenties. And looking back on the way various things were taught (or not taught), a lot of people must have stopped thinking and just believed the hype.

Yeah, I was definitely a "there really aren't that many problems in America" as a kid. Once I grew older I started realizing that wasn't quite right.
