A RADIUS NO MORE THAN 17 LIGHT-HOURS WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK If you were able to (somehow) stand just above the event horizon of this supermassive black hole, it would look like an endless plain of nothingness below you, stretching out in all directions as far as you could see.

And here’s the thing. Sagittarius A* isn’t even a large supermassive black hole by universal standards. Something so big you’d have to travel the distance from the Sun to the Earth ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY TIMES just to get from the center to its outer edge, and it’s piddling.

Loose upper bounds get very loose sometimes.

I mean, I don’t even care if it’s half that, it’s still something unimaginable

Physics makes my brain short circuit, always has. I can grasp all sorts of abstract concepts, but only the most rudimentary physics. Maybe being slightly dyscalculic has something to do with it.

For comparison, the two Voyager spacecrafts, which have traveled farther away from Earth than anything humanity has ever built, are only 17 and 19 light-hours away respectively. So if you swapped Cygnus X-1 and the sun, they would be the only evidence we were ever here.

Sorry, I meant Sagittarius A*, not Cygnus X-1. It's late and I have difficulty keeping my black holes straight.

Now think about the fact that space is big enough to hold many of these.

Probably a supermassive black hole in the center of every galaxy. Maybe a few hundred billion galaxies in the universe...
