I have never played a game with a battle system so relentlessly and needlessly hostile towards the player as FFVII remake.
Stuns/grapples are entirely too long and take away player agency in a way that feels incredibly upsetting, especially since you can take damage during them. A particular offender is sleep - in every other FF, sleep is broken on taking damage. This one doesn’t.

Finally, the AI does little to no thinking on its own, and switching between characters mid battle is not only disorienting, but can also draw enemy attention to a healer precisely when you don’t want. Stuff like Aeris’ Arcane Ward mean characters have to be manually positioned.

All in all, if you’re going to make me play an active battle system (ala Souls/Nioh), it better behave like an active battle system. FFVII remake does not, it takes away from what is otherwise a very good game, and it’s a garbage trend that Squeenix has been following for years.
