It’s just super frustrating that every iteration of FF is one where Squeenix tries to move further away from a system that wasn’t broke, and it keeps getting progressively stupider.
I mean, yeah, from a meta standpoint every human designed system is going to end up inherently nonfunctional after a given length of time, but in terms of rpg combat I feel like turn-based was pretty darn nice.

i was just wondering what the good system was in this context. just DQ-style i-go-you-go?
-
like the old FFs used to use

You can set it to the classic turn based one right?
-
No, that just makes the characters auto guard and auto basic attack. I guess at some level you could consider it turn based, but it really isn’t.

FF6 where it was turn based but with some real-time inputs (ie. Sabin’s blitz moves) is probably peak RPG combat system. So we mastered it in the 16 bit era and then tinkerer with it endlessly

Although, I could also argue that Phantasy Star IV from the same 16 bit era had the best system. Completely turn-based, but you could have preset macros for an entire turn’s worth of moves to facilitate combos and speed up random fights
