It feels like this should be a game that punches all my buttons (rogue-like with pervasive upgrades, ARPG procedural dungeons, pixel art, attempting to Tell A Story), but... I dunno. My gut sensation is that there was a lot of potential that never got realized properly.

I dunno, after playing games like Dead Cells/Hollow Knight/Enter the Gungeon, my threshold for retro pixel games is pretty high.

Like, if you’re going to go full JRPG with party members and upgrades and a central hub, just build around that with tons of options and give me a turn-based combat system. If you’re going to go action combat, you can’t fuck up the fluidity.

Anyways, it’s evident that a lot of care was put into creating this game, but I’m not sure it’s fun to play.

I like how things unlock as you play through the game but I don’t think I’ll ever get past the first area since my favored character, Linda, is horrible against the spider boss

She’s actually one of the best characters! Moving while attacking is OP in this game. Spider boss got me the first two times until I figured out the attack pattern for the slam, and also realized I could attack it while it was spitting webs/summoning other spiders.

Your third point is spot on. I couldn't place what was wrong with it but I think that's a good way to put it.
