Unless I'm mistaken, didn't Obama try to close Guantanamo, but got stymied by Republicans in Congress?

This New Yorker article is pretty comprehensive (2016), and basically says he tried to but really wasn’t willing to commit to it, which matches with my memories of the time (and is one of the few things, along with expanding drone strikes and executive power, I think he failed)

Probably because people know a guy who allows children to die in animal cages in this country cannot be reached with any argument regarding the closing of Guantanamo Bay.

This is why I listen to a National Security Law podcast, that talks about this all the time, on a legal level. It’s mostly showing how using the military to hold/try was a terrible idea in all respects. The cases against them will never end.

i’m still baffled at how 26 or so kids were gunned down at school and gun control is still a fucking debate.
