I get why they went the way they did, considering the environment of the game, but it would be nice to try to build something different even if it was harder to do so.

Have you played the campaign yet? The structure of it shows how the tech trees are sort of about not going down those paths and balancing long-term planning vs short authoritarian fixes
-
Haven’t gone through the campaign yet, but unless it’s *drastically* different there’s really no downside to going full Ice Nazi in terms of city sustainability. Now that I know how the systems work it’s a matter of preventing the initial cascade of failures early.

Tbf, you can totally avoid going fascist in either case. You don't *have* to go down the Book of Laws and indeed it's the good ending not to go all the way.
-
It is much easier to be "kind" and go down Faith than Discipline though. Discipline turns shady almost immediately.

In Endless I was able to not go down either of those trees, but yeah - I would like to see more opportunities under Purpose. (Supposedly you can beat the main scenario using just Adaptation but that's way past hard mode for me!)

I’m going to try it now that I know it changes the ending. The main game problem to solve is preventing that initial cascade of failures from starting (illness, starvation, etc).
