If you missed it earlier, Booklist gave me a very nice starred review for OTAKU! https://www.booklistonline.com/Otaku/pid=9728518 … Kirkus called me “Irredeemable in any world, real or virtual.” https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/chris-kluwe/otaku/ … ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I used to love reading kirkus reviews because they are notoriously rough. Anything they called decent, I knew was going to be a good book. I found out you could pay them to review your book, & if you were unhappy with what they said, you could have them not publish their review

Apparently I misread the link and it's only for self published or unpublished authors but from the same page "With our most popular review option priced at $425, you can receive an affordable book review that could generously boost your writing career."

Yeah I read it, looks like a great way to prey on unsuspecting beginning writers

I had one such author cold call the store & try to get us to carry his book off the strength of his kirkus review. After reading the review it seemed a bit off (such a glowing review from a site that shits on everything) & that's how I found out about their indie review system.

What’s funny is that they actually liked SPARKLEPONIES, which is in very much the same vein theme/politics-wise as OTAKU. I’m guessing it was a different reviewer.

I feel like whomever reviewed Otaku isn't a gamer, and doesn't realize how toxic gamers can be? The comments the reviewer criticized is what makes Otaku more realistic than RPO was

Yeah, that’s the conclusion my editor and I came to as well (and what makes the “were any women involved at any step?” comment so funny/sad). Every woman who’s read the book has been “Welp, that’s exactly what my experience online is.”
