Seriously. Imagine engaging in actions that have a high probability of destroying your civilization when there are SO many ways this reality wants to end us. Yellowstone is guaranteed to go off at some point. A comet WILL hit us. The sun WILL expand.

The fight has never been against each other. It has ALWAYS been against this reality we inhabit, but hey, if you don’t want to make the conscious choice to figure that out... Fermi’s paradox exists for a reason.

Tangential, but this paper (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1806.02404.pdf …) from 2018 is a counterpoint saying the formulas behind the Fermi paradox made too many assumptions, & that statistically we may actually be alone in terms of "intelligent" life in the observable universe.

I disagree in every possible sense. Intelligence is the norm, not the exception. The problem is, intelligence arises from conflict, and eventually someone pushes the button.

I'd love to believe that intelligence is the norm out there. Until proven either way, we need to act to save ourselves from pushing the damn button.

Intelligence is always the norm. The environment shapes you until you can shape the environment. Unfortunately, everything leading up to that point is a nonstop chorus of “Push the button,” because that’s how you made it to that point.
