Sometimes I focus on the fact that humanity will absolutely cease to exist at some point. Maybe in a million years. Maybe more. No matter what we do. It’s cynical as hell but it actually centers me.

Intelligence itself is the great filter for intelligent life. And we, as a species, are being filtered out.

I actually wrote about that in my first book, in that eventually an intelligent species kills itself unless it makes a deliberate decision not to do so. None have made it so far!

Tangential, but this paper (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1806.02404.pdf …) from 2018 is a counterpoint saying the formulas behind the Fermi paradox made too many assumptions, & that statistically we may actually be alone in terms of "intelligent" life in the observable universe.

I disagree in every possible sense. Intelligence is the norm, not the exception. The problem is, intelligence arises from conflict, and eventually someone pushes the button.
