Thoughts on the XFL’s kicking rules @ChrisWarcraft ? Seems like a good bit of pressure on kickers to be very accurate.

They’re hot garbage. For a kicker to hit the ball from his own 25 to somewhere between the opponent’s 20 and goal-line means he has to drive the ball hard, which means when it hits it’s very likely to roll forward, which means this incentivizes never catching a kickoff.

Punting rules are the same. Even with not allowing the gunners to release early, you’re incentivizing teams to hang high, short kicks that will always be fair caught or will be let free to hit the ground in the hopes of a major touchback or out of bounds roll.

Especially with lateral movement allowed and the jammers not allowed to engage until the gunner crosses the line of scrimmage, the gunners are just going to sprint sideways and then curve upfield with minimal evasion needed, and will get down there almost as fast as they do now.

I’d be very surprised if they talked to any actual kickers and punters when they crafted these, because these are obvious outcomes.
