ME: “people take youth sports too seriously” ALSO ME: spends an hour filling out four different AYSO playoff lineup cards for a U10G team based on if the kids want to play for the win or play to have fun

I dunno what to tell you. Competitive youth sports from a metaphysical level is supremely fucked up. It also made me who I am. caveat emptor

As someone who was always picked last, I can assure you that kids figure it out on their own.

Kids know where they fall in line, it is the coaches job to keep them learning the fundamentals and enjoying the sport. Kids haven’t even begun to develop physically at that age and a win for a coach is seeing your kids move on to the next level.

Its best to introduce it along with the concept of "there always is a bigger fish" You're not always going to be the smartest/fastest/best etc and thats not just ok its fucking great it means sometimes at work you get to slack off a little

I knew full well by grade 4/5 which sports I was good in and which I was not, and who was better than me in which sports and who wasn't.
-
I think its actually harder for the good kids to understand why the other kids struggle so much.

I feel this because I’ve coached my kid’s baseball team for several years—they’re going into the second year of 9–10 this summer—and I definitely don’t have solid answers.

One of the ways we’ve done well (IMO) is discussing it as a matter of preparation, attention, and effort; rather than ability.

Grew up competing from an early age and loved it. Key is teaching kids to love the game and how to win or lose with grace. We grew up in a rural area where all had to play or there was no game. Less of a kill or be killed mentality. Lots of great memories.
