(Like I feel I have perspective because if they don’t unanimously vote for “play for the win” then we’re going to play for fun, but I dunno?)

(And what really is the appropriate age to introduce to a child the idea that they’re not good enough? Should 8-9 year olds be grappling with the concept that the people around them are somehow “better”?)

I dunno what to tell you. Competitive youth sports from a metaphysical level is supremely fucked up. It also made me who I am. caveat emptor

That’s the difference between taking the “sport” seriously and taking the children’s “fun” seriously.

What is this “play to have fun”?

How much do the lineups change, just out of curiosity?

Some kids will play more in the early match and less in the later match if we’re playing to win, otherwise I’ll sub them in equally for both games

I mean, if they choose “play to win” and end up losing, it’s not the end of the world. Good opportunity to say, “okay, yes, we lost, but what did we do well? What do we need to work on?” Healthy responsibility is good (and lacking for A LOT of kids.)
