Hrm I'd be curious to note if the extra distance to travel around the surface of the ball, on the lace side veersus the smooth side, actually hits with enough lift to cause the directional change After all, that difference in distance is how planes fucking fly!

I guarantee you it does, based on first hand observations of how the ball flies when laces are to the side as opposed to straight forward.
