Before and during this period of time, mainland China was invaded multiple times (most notably by the British Empire, Japan, and the US during the Boxer Rebellion). The Chinese people, understandably, have some societal scars from that.

With the formation of what’s now modern China in the early 1930’s, a key component of the national identity became the idea of a unified China strong enough to resist future invasions (particularly after the rape of Nanking).

Tangent: Google “Rape of Nanking” and you’ll have a better understanding of why East and South East Asia has a strained relationship with Japan. Unlike post-war Germany, Japan has failed to make restitution at a scale that will silence critics.
