Just played *that* team in my younger daughter’s AYSO u10 league. You know the one. They have one fast player and the entire gameplan is “kick it as hard as you can down the middle of the field and hope she toe-punches it in after two wildly uncontrolled touches.”

That’s the hardest part of coaching for me, my oldest is at u8: kids hate losing, but the most effective strategies at that level are suboptimal for what’s to come. My kiddo lost her pace and confidence after I moved her up too soon and she struggled. Took months to get back.

The tough part is keeping the skills kids engaged long enough to outpace the speed kids. As much as winning isn’t the goal, losing too much really sucks.
