Parents - please volunteer to coach for youth soccer leagues so that way we don’t end up with ten kids on a team because trying to figure out those substitutions is THE WORST.

I'm in my third year and I think this is the year they break me, especially because I REALLY have no idea on how to coach soccer

Check out books by Wayne Harrison and Marcus DiBernardo on Amazon. They really help break things down. But yes, focus on the basics. I'm coaching our club team to focus on defense in the fall - pressure, support, cover - and possession in the spring.

One of the best ways I’ve found to coach defense for u12 and under is to just teach them how to stay between the ball and the goal. Make the offensive player try to beat you, and when they take a mistouch, poke it away. Usually they take a big swing, miss, and the ball is past.

One of my kids had a good practice last week staying in front of the other kid, so I told him to do it in the game. He got to his spot in front of the attacking kid, and looked at his parents as the ball slowly rolled into the goal. Me:pic.twitter.com/QAdxj2mpWh
