Parents - please volunteer to coach for youth soccer leagues so that way we don’t end up with ten kids on a team because trying to figure out those substitutions is THE WORST.

Check out books by Wayne Harrison and Marcus DiBernardo on Amazon. They really help break things down. But yes, focus on the basics. I'm coaching our club team to focus on defense in the fall - pressure, support, cover - and possession in the spring.

To teach possession, help them understand the concept of space. It's abstract and takes a lot of patience, but emphasize their positional awareness. On offense, they want to move to space and create space. On defense, you take away space.

I always have my kids focus on one or two tactics each game. It is usually a carryover from practice. It helps remind them what we trained. When doing this, link concepts. Ex: we focused on clearing to the "low option" zone (outside of the field) and then taught the

outside mids to move to the sideline when we gain possession to create space. The two ideas led to regular counter attack opportunities.

These are all great concepts, and kids learn faster than you might think, especially if you break it down into bite size chunks
