For example, a 55 yard punt down the middle of the field with lowish halftime that your cover team covers well isn’t going to go score nearly as high as a 45 yard punt against the sideline with high hangtime that sees a big return because a guy vacated his lane.

The punter who drilled it down the middle of the field didn’t put his team in the best position to succeed, but got lucky. The guy who hit it to the sideline did his job excellently, but got unlucky when it came to relying on the other ten guys.

But if all you went on was gross or net, you’d think the guy hitting it down the middle of the field was the better punter (he’s not). That’s what the formula is designed to fix. Unfortunately, it’s also tough to track since the NFL doesn’t track hang time or where the ball lands

I know they haven’t reached the NFL yet, but aren’t aussy style kicks designed to maximize bounces?

They are, but there’s still an element of randomness due to the shape of the ball. It’s almost impossible to guarantee the ball will bounce an exact direction (I found one way, but it is incredibly hard to execute consistently, so it’s really not worth practicing).
