Sadly, it’s usually based off your gross average, because out of the 2100ish players and coaches voting, maybe 75 actually know what constitutes good punting. The rest just look at who’s the first name on the gross average list and vote for that person.https://twitter.com/NikolasMeurett/status/1169929707401486336 …

I go back even further. But Jon Ryan was great for that. Holmgren prioritized special teams and coverage early 2000s. Especially after Qwest Field was built. Pinning a team back deep with the crowd closer, and defense was a strength. Curious what your thoughts are playing there.

It was a cool stadium, but it was outdoors, which I hate (since wind is one of the only things that can ruin a punter’s day). I generally punted well there though, and at least it wasn’t as bad as Chicago wind wise.

Writing this I was totally thinking of Jon Ryan in his Packer days (got to meet him a few times, class act) both he and Masthay after him seemed to have very few returns against them and the starting yardage for opponents was consistently low, but I never saw the recognition

Not to mention I think Jon Ryan had more tackles than half the special teams one year which was simultaneously amazing and tragic
