Sadly, it’s usually based off your gross average, because out of the 2100ish players and coaches voting, maybe 75 actually know what constitutes good punting. The rest just look at who’s the first name on the gross average list and vote for that person.https://twitter.com/NikolasMeurett/status/1169929707401486336 …

Could you devise a rough formula to guide voters? I think, in all sports, the voters are in an information deficit when trying to decide. Something like a WAR for punters?

Quasi-related follow up: Wife and I both teach HS. We were at her school's game last night. Very little punting. Is it that HS students are generally not physically developed to be able to kick/punt well, a matter of not having had the time to develop proper technique, or both?

Second one. There are plenty of guys out there with excellent legs, but it takes years to develop the consistency required to hit a good punt. Most of it is learning how to drop the ball properly, and then executing at speed.

Him and Janikowksi were the only highlights for that team for so damn long

Yeah, they really were not good during that era. Although, I will say, due to Al drafting for speed, their special teams coverage was always amazing. Turns out when all you need a guy to do is run a 4.3 forty down the field with no other responsibilities, you can cover long punts
