A brief TwitterThread
It is entirely possible to recognize that Epstein’s death was desired by powerful implicated figures, while also recognizing that Epstein’s death would be aided by the systemic failures pervading our judicial system.

For a man used to spending his entire life ignoring any and all consequences, aided by the society he lived in, to be held accountable would be the grossest violation. It would unmoor his personal foundations.

For an employee responsible for a notorious pedophile, looking the other way, especially if you thought death is what he deserved, would be second nature. Our prison system prioritizes retribution. Think of Oz, Orange is the New Black. All emphasize the inhumanity of prison life.

We are taught from an early age in America that whatever happens to you in prison is deserved, no matter how terrible, because all rights are relinquished once you enter. “Don’t drop the soap.”

In that reality, it’s an easy leap to think that Jeffery Epstein was reminded of how bad things could get by those he chose to represent him, and that he was allowed to pursue the natural endpoint by those who didn’t care about his well-being, and were in a position to (not) act.

Long story short - I want to know who Epstein’s lawyers were talking to leading up to their client’s death. I want to know the degree of separation between them and other implicated figures. I want to know if they discharged their ethical duty, or another duty entirely.

Above all, I want our prison system to change. For-profit prisons are a disgrace to any rational thinking mind, and it’s past time we reckoned with that horror. The science is clear. Rehabilitation works, not retribution. We need to move past our Calvinist roots.

That is.... not the simplest answer. The simplest answer is always incompetence

You'd be amazed how much incompetence can be bought and paid for

Or, the people who were meant to guard Epstein don’t care about human life anyway, so expecting them to put forth extra effort for this guy is too much. Hanlon’s Razor.
