Why are NFL punters so woefully unprepared when a kicker gets injured?

Because one is rarely skilled enough to do both. Even the guys who do double duty in college specialize in one or the other at the next level.

Yes they specialize. But if they are back up to kicker, shouldn't they be competent at kickoffs and short place kicks?

How much work do they realistically get to put in, though? I also figure in game injuries at those positions are relatively rare so it may not be a high priority/concern.

Yeah you practice maybe once or twice a year for emergency backup stuff. The mechanics of the two motions (kicking/punting) do not mix well
