I don't think anyone under Trump could prevent him from screwing over our country, and I think Mattis was happy to take advantage of the position to get things done he wanted to do while ignoring the byproducts.

I guess my initial question would have been better asked in two ways: A.) what do you think Mattis did of his own accord rather than because Trump commanded that was bad? B.) was the country/world better off because Mattis did the job he did?

Because I see Mattis as a person I largely disagree with who still spent decades *serving* and probably deserves the benefit of the doubt more than anyone involved in this mess. He might be the only one who was there for the right reasons.
