Punts are fine. Let me tell you my semiserious suggestion for kickoffs/extra points.https://twitter.com/ChipDaRip78/status/1070100424198303744 …

Option 3 - Kickoff from the 50 with no coverage or return. Instead, if the kicker puts it through the uprights, his team gets two points and the opponent starts on the 25. If the kicker misses, no points and they start on the 35.

During the kick attempt, the return team forms a semi-circle behind the kicker, and without physically impeding him, can use any form of psycheout they can think of ala Baseketball. Props are encouraged, and possibly mandatory.

Tell me you wouldn't watch the shit out of kickoffs with that rule in place.

Oh. Oh my. I actually really like that. Would definitely turn the game into "3 phases" like coaches always blather on about because S Teams because wayyy more important!

Jon Bois did some pretty good statistical analysis on why kickoffs are bad and should be done away with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_SsIKgwvz4 …

I actually liked the Greg Schiano suggestion that kickoffs are replaced with a 4th and 15 from the 40. More punting! (possibly the only good thing to say about Greg Schiano, too)

Option 1 reminds me of NFL Blitz's handling of the PAT. Way back when that game was relevant apparently the PAT was considered so much of a joke that they made it a free point, which changed the 2 point conversion headgame to risk vs reward. However, normal KOs

Of course, NFL Blitz wasn't the 'deepest NFL Sim' since it was an Arcade game a la NBA Jam (No penalties, Pass interference is legal, minimized playbooks). Though, the game will call you out if you ran the Suicide Blitz play too often. (at least Blitz 2001 on the PS1)
