Every day, I worry pain isn’t real to anyone outside its effect. And every day, I worry my pain isn’t real to the entities running our simulation.

Surely it matters *what* the pain is, and not just the intensity. Some pain is "um, you've never done this before, are you sure?" and some is "you've busted something rather important, dumbass!" Important to have some idea of the qualitative difference.

It depends on the context and what the pain is and what the circumstances surrounding that are.

My fathers line to anything short of arterial bleeding was “I’ve been hit worse than that in the eyeball & never ever blinked...rub some dirt on and get back out there and play. I credit this to my ability to have surgeries with no subsequent pain meds and minimal anesthesia

And that's partially what I'm afraid of, because I've played through some pretty serious shit since the alternative was losing my job. I don't want my kids going through that unless it's *their* choice to do so.

As someone with chronic pain, I think about this a lot. Does my pain justify staying home from work or god forbid, complaining? I do think positive attitude and my daughter seeing me push through is being a good role model. I don't think I'd tell her to push through though.

Yeah pain ranges are super subjective. I’ve had 4 or 5 really horrible pain experiences, but I only “think” one of them was the worst. I don’t know for sure unless I had them all happen at the same time.

I’d error more toward hockey and away from soccer (from a play through pain standpoint).

I'm not a professional athlete, but I wrestle with that same thought all the same with my kids....

I try to teach the kids to respect the pain that says they are injured, and ignore the muscle bulding pain. They are different, but I think each person feels that differently.

I coach 16-19 year old footballers and whenever they complain about an injury, i always ask, do you need to stop or just want to? Its amazing how many decide they just wanted to and carry on.
