(Reason he missed is that the spot was a bit inside, causing the kicker to sweep across his body in order to make contact. Wherever your hips are pointing when you make contact is where the ball is going to go)

So a big difference between the two is the size of the ball. A rugby ball is much fatter and rounder than a football, which means its sweet spot is correspondingly bigger (it's a lot more like a soccer ball). The sweet spot on a football is maaaaaaybe an inch or two in diameter.

That's fair. And dropkicking/penalty kicks are quite different from the opposed kicks in US football. Still bloody impressive though. dropgoals used to be worth the same number of points as a try- then they increased the value of the latter to prioritize tries.
